Dog Parks: History and Fun Facts
There are an estimated 50,000 dogs in Arlington County alone and 77 million in the United States (2019).
According to R-Dogs’ 2018 survey, over 400 dogs lived within six blocks of Gateway Park West in 2018. Today the number likely exceeds 1,000.
The first dog park was built 1979 in Berkeley, CA.
In 2015 National Parks and Recreation Associations described Dog Parks as “the fastest growing segment of city parks.”
A 2018 Trust for Public Land study showed “more than 300 new dog parks opened in America's 100 largest cities between 2009 and 2018, a jump of 40%.”
